Nurse-Out Balloons In honor of World Breastfeeding Week(WBW), we encouraged our members to go out together and breastfeed in public.

The aim of the campaign was to generate public awareness and support for breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding is healthy for both mothers & babies, and this WBW, we wanted to highlight that breastfeeding should be an integral part of a mother's and her baby's life.

ABOUT WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK (WBW):
Celebrated every year on August 1st, World Breastfeeding Week commemorates the signing of the Innocenti Declaration in Florence Italy on August 1, 1990. The Declaration pledged to support, protect   and promote breastfeeding worldwide, and was signed by representatives from UNICEF and The World Health Organization.

As a global goal for optimal maternal and child health and nutrition, all women should be enabled to practice exclusive breastfeeding and all infants should be fed exclusively on breast milk from birth to
four to six months of age. Thereafter, children should continue to breastfeed while receiving appropriate and adequate complementary foods for up to two years of age or beyond. This child feeding ideal is to be achieved by creating an appropriate environment of awareness and support so that women can benefit in this manner.

On Sunday 4 August 2002, the parents from Asia Parents Group held our Public Walkabout & Nurse-Out to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week and to spread the message of the goodness of human milk for human babies.

We demonstrated by example how as mothers, we could continue our active lifestyles simply by breastfeeding.  No need to bring milk powder & hot water, no need to cart around huge bags.  Just a waist pouch & slings.  It is our hope that by promoting the image of breastfeeding in this way, more people will accept breastfeeding as a simple, natural everyday occurrence and the normal way to feed infants and young children. We also want to encourage expectant mothers by showing them that it is possible to breastfeed in public without anyone being embarrassed.  And that nursing in public can be a can be done with ease.

SCHEDULE FOR OUTING
Dinner at Fish+Co.On Sunday, we met at Toa Payoh Bus Interchange.  One group took the MRT  and another group took the public bus to Orchard Rd.  The MRT group stopped at Somerset station and made a walk down  to a Plaza Singapura shopping centre.  Along the way, some mothers were  nursing.  Many had not only our babies but older children with us as well, giving out  breastfeeding flyers, and showing by example our style of parenting.Family Dinner

We then met at Plaza Singapura where we gave out breastfeeding balloons and had tea/dinner at Fish & Co.  The mothers and children were tired out by the end of the day, but happy and had enjoyed the outing.  And yes, we did prove once and for all that nursing is a normal thing and made a big statement for breastfeeding that day!
